Minoxidil topical (Rogaine)

What minoxidil is and how it works

Minoxidil topical 5% foam is an over-the-counter treatment to regrow hair on the crown (vertex) of the scalp in men with hereditary hair loss. It is not intended for frontal baldness or a receding hairline. Women should use the corresponding women's product. (1)

Must be used consistently twice daily. Hair regrowth may take 2 to 4 months, and continued use is necessary to maintain regrowth. Not for sudden or patchy hair loss or when the scalp is irritated or infected.

Mechanism of action: how minoxidil works

The labeling does not provide a detailed pharmacological description. Minoxidil is a vasodilator when given orally; the mechanism of hair growth is not fully understood. (1)

• Do not use if your scalp is red, inflamed, infected, irritated, or painful. (all uses) (1)

• Do not use if there is no family history of hair loss. (all uses) (1)

How to take minoxidil

• Apply half a capful of foam to the dry scalp in the hair loss area twice daily (morning and night). Massage gently with fingertips. Wash hands after application.
• Do not use more than the recommended dose. Hair regrowth may be seen as early as 2 months; some men need at least 4 months. If there is no regrowth after 4 months of consistent use, the Drug Facts panel directs consulting a doctor before continuing.

Missed dose

The product labeling does not provide specific missed dose instructions. If a dose is missed, apply as soon as remembered, but do not apply extra to make up for it. Consult a pharmacist if you have questions.

Store between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Pressurized container: do not puncture or incinerate. Do not expose to temperatures above 120°F.
