A troponin test measures a heart-muscle protein released into blood when heart muscle is injured.

Why this test may be ordered

Preparation and collection
This is often an urgent test and needs no fasting delay. Tell the clinical team when symptoms began and about kidney disease, recent procedures, strenuous exercise, and medicines.
A health professional usually takes a small blood sample from a vein. Collection normally takes only a few minutes.
Blood collection has a small risk of brief discomfort, bruising, light-headedness, or rarely infection at the needle site.
Understanding results
Troponin is interpreted with symptoms, ECG findings, the assay-specific decision limit, timing, and the rise or fall across repeat samples. Elevated troponin means heart-muscle injury, not automatically one specific cause.
- Above the assay decision limit: Supports heart-muscle injury and may occur with heart attack or other cardiac and systemic conditions. Limitation: The result does not by itself identify the cause; timing and change on serial tests are essential. Next step: Urgent clinical assessment with ECG, repeat troponin, and evaluation for the cause.
- Not elevated on one sample: The concentration is not above that assay's decision limit at that time. Limitation: An early sample may be falsely reassuring and different assays have different limits. Next step: Follow the emergency pathway; repeat testing may be required according to timing and protocol.
- Assay type, sex-specific limits, kidney dysfunction, timing, and serial change can alter interpretation.
- Many conditions besides coronary blockage can raise troponin.
