A respiratory pathogens (RP) panel checks for viruses and bacteria in your respiratory tract using a single sample. It helps identify the cause of a serious respiratory infection, especially when you are hospitalized or at risk for complications. Results usually come in a few hours, allowing faster, targeted treatment.

Understanding this test
Use the reference interval and units printed by the laboratory that performed the test. A result outside that interval is not a diagnosis by itself, and a result inside it does not rule out every condition. Your symptoms, history, medicines, timing, and related tests can change what the result means.
- The panel only tests for the specific pathogens included; a negative result does not rule out other causes.
- Sample collection errors (e.g., insufficient sample) can affect accuracy.
- Results must be interpreted by your healthcare provider along with your symptoms, medical history, and other tests.
What to do next
Based on your results, your provider will recommend treatment and/or order more tests. These may include a bacteria culture, viral blood tests, and a Gram stain. Talk to your provider if you have questions about your results.
