A protein in urine test measures how much protein is in your urine. Normally, very little protein is present. A large amount may indicate a kidney problem.
Preparation and collection
No special preparations needed. For a 24-hour urine sample, you will receive a special container and instructions.
Understanding this test
Use the reference interval and units printed by the laboratory that performed the test. A result outside that interval is not a diagnosis by itself, and a result inside it does not rule out every condition. Your symptoms, history, medicines, timing, and related tests can change what the result means.
- A single high result may be temporary and not indicate a chronic condition.
- Persistent high protein requires further testing to diagnose the underlying cause.
- At-home test kits are available and can provide accurate results if instructions are followed carefully.
