A phosphate in blood test measures the amount of phosphate in your blood. Phosphate is an electrolyte that helps build bones, make energy, and help nerves and muscles work. The test is used with other tests to diagnose or monitor kidney disease, bone disorders, and parathyroid gland issues. Why this test may be ordered

Preparation and collection

The test measures the amount of phosphate (a form of phosphorus) in your blood. Phosphate is an electrolyte that helps build bones, make energy, and support nerve and muscle function. Your kidneys and intestines tightly control phosphate levels, and they are linked to calcium, vitamin D, and parathyroid hormone (PTH).

  • Higher than normal (hyperphosphatemia): Your phosphate level is higher than normal. This is called hyperphosphatemia. It may indicate a condition that needs evaluation, but it does not always require treatment. Limitation: High levels can be seen with kidney disease, hypoparathyroidism, acidosis, or long-term use of certain medicines (e.g., steroids, phosphate-containing laxatives). It may indicate a condition that needs treatment, but mildly low levels may not require intervention. Mildly low levels often are not a problem, but severely low levels can be life-threatening.
