- Screening or diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or prediabetes

Preparation and collection
Fasting is usually not required for HbA1c alone. Follow instructions for any additional tests.
A health professional usually takes a small blood sample from a vein. Collection normally takes only a few minutes.
Blood collection has a small risk of brief discomfort, bruising, light-headedness, or rarely infection at the needle site.
Understanding results
Interpretation depends on whether the test is for diagnosis or monitoring and whether red-cell conditions or assay factors could make HbA1c unreliable.
- Higher result: Usually reflects higher average glucose exposure. Limitation: Red-cell disorders, recent blood loss or transfusion, pregnancy, kidney or liver disease, and haemoglobin variants can affect accuracy. Next step: Confirm diagnostic results when required and agree an individual monitoring target with a clinician.
- Lower or expected result: May reflect lower average glucose exposure or effective management. Limitation: A reassuring value can still be misleading when red-cell lifespan or the assay is affected. Next step: Review alongside glucose readings, symptoms, treatment, and the testing purpose.
- HbA1c does not show short-term glucose swings or a current glucose level.
- It is not used by itself for every diabetes type or during every pregnancy situation.
