An electrolyte panel is a blood test that measures the levels of the body's main electrolytes—sodium, chloride, potassium, bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. Electrolytes help balance water, maintain acid-base (pH) levels, support nerve and muscle function, and keep the heart rhythm steady. This test is used to check for electrolyte, fluid, or pH imbalances, often as part of a routine screening or to evaluate symptoms such as nausea, confusion, weakness, irregular heartbeat, or muscle cramps.

Why this test may be ordered

  • As part of a routine blood screening or comprehensive metabolic panel
  • To find out if your body has a fluid imbalance or an imbalance in acid and base levels
  • If you have symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, confusion and irritability, weakness, irregular or fast heartbeat, diarrhea or constipation, fatigue, headaches, muscle weakness or cramps, or numbness/tingling in arms, legs, fingers, or toes

Preparation and collection

No special preparations are needed for an electrolyte panel.

A health care professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm, using a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial. This usually takes less than five minutes.

There is very little risk to having a blood test. You may have slight pain or bruising at the spot where the needle was put in, but most symptoms go away quickly.

Understanding results

Your results will include measurements for each electrolyte. Abnormal electrolyte levels can be caused by many different conditions, including dehydration, kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, lung infection, malabsorption, liver disease, acidosis, alkalosis, or certain medicines. If your electrolyte levels were not in the normal range, it doesn't necessarily mean you have a medical problem needing treatment. Many factors can affect electrolyte levels, such as taking in too much fluid or losing fluid because of vomiting or diarrhea. Also, certain medicines such as antacids and blood pressure medicines may cause abnormal results. Talk to your provider about what your results mean.

  • Sodium (Na) level: Low sodium (hyponatremia) or high sodium (hypernatremia) may indicate a fluid imbalance or other condition. Limitation: Many factors can affect sodium levels, including fluid intake and certain medicines. Next step: Your provider will interpret your sodium level in the context of your overall health and may recommend follow-up testing.
  • Potassium (K) level: Low potassium (hypokalemia) or high potassium (hyperkalemia) may affect heart and muscle function. Limitation: Potassium levels can be influenced by diet, medicines, and other factors. Next step: Your provider will interpret your potassium level and may suggest further evaluation if needed.
  • Chloride (Cl) level: Low chloride (hypochloremia) or high chloride (hyperchloremia) may indicate a fluid or acid-base imbalance. Limitation: Chloride levels can be affected by fluid loss or certain medicines. Next step: Your provider will interpret your chloride level in the context of your other results.
  • Bicarbonate (CO2) level: Low bicarbonate (acidosis) or high bicarbonate (alkalosis) may indicate an acid-base imbalance. Limitation: Bicarbonate levels can be influenced by breathing patterns and kidney function. Next step: Your provider will interpret your bicarbonate level and may order additional tests such as an anion gap.
  • Abnormal electrolyte levels do not necessarily mean you have a medical problem needing treatment.
  • Many factors can affect electrolyte levels, including fluid intake, vomiting, diarrhea, and certain medicines such as antacids and blood pressure medicines.
  • Results should be interpreted by a healthcare professional in the context of your overall health and other test results.
